Resort to resort: Megève, Courchevel, Val d'Isère and Chamonix by road
By the VANTAGE editorial team ·
The map makes the Alps look compact. The roads disagree: valleys run parallel, passes close in winter, and a journey of 90 kilometres can take twice as long as one of 150 on the motorway.
Megève – Chamonix
About 35 km and 40 minutes via Sallanches and the Arve valley — the easiest of the alpine links, and comfortably a half-day trip for the Aiguille du Midi.
Megève – Courchevel
Roughly 130 km and 2h15 through Albertville and Moûtiers. Traffic on transfer Saturdays and the final climb are the two variables; leaving before nine transforms the journey.
Megève – Val d'Isère
Around 160 km and 2h45 via the Tarentaise. Long but scenic, and best done with a driver so the day is spent on the mountain rather than in the seat.
Megève – Genève and beyond
70 km and 1h10 to the airport, with Annecy at 60 km and Lyon at 200 km. These are the routes where a fixed-fare private transfer earns its place over improvisation.
Frequently asked
- How long from Megève to Courchevel?
- Around 2h15 by road in normal conditions, longer on Saturdays during school holidays.
- Are mountain passes usable in winter?
- Several — including the Cormet de Roselend and the Col des Aravis at times — close or become unreliable. Winter itineraries follow the valleys, which is why some journeys are longer than the map suggests.
- Can a chauffeur wait at the destination resort?
- Yes. Day disposal keeps the vehicle with you, which for a ski day in another valley is generally simpler than two separate transfers.
